James C. Whitfield – the candidate for Circuit Judge Place #17 – started his career as a police officer in Leeds and Moody. He went on to serve as a bailiff in Jefferson County Family Court while attending law school at night. Upon graduation, he became an Alabama Assistant Attorney General, before starting his own practice.

Julie Palmer (I)
Julie Palmer is a Circuit Judge in Place #20, part of the Domestic Relations Division. She’s been recognized by the Alabama State Bar Family Law Section as “Judge of the Year” in 2015. Judge Palmer has served the community tremendously, known for always putting the best interests of children first in the cases she handles.

Bentley Patrick (I)
Judge Bentley Patrick, running for Place #22, was appointed to the bench in March 2015. Prior to that, he spent the last 18 years of his practice handling civil litigation across North and Central Alabama. A trained arbitrator, Judge Patrick has heard or written decisions in 350 cases, and was named Alabama Arbitrator of the Year in 2007.

Dorothea Batiste (I)
Dorothea Batiste is a Circuit Judge running in Place #23. She is the first African-American to become a Domestic Relations Judge in the Birmingham Division. During her career on the bench Judge Batiste has closed more than 5,700 cases, and is well-known for her deep concern for the children of divorce.

Gloria Bahakel previously served as a Circuit Court Trial Judge, Criminal Division, for 12+ years. While on the bench, she handled over 10,000 criminal cases, including over 60 Capital Murder cases. She was an award-winning judge with an exemplary judicial record. She's practiced law for 16 years and also serves as a legal educator.

Riggs Walker is running for District Court Judge, Place # 4. He has worked to better Jefferson County as the Deputy District Attorney for 17 years. He’ll be vigorous and trustworthy judge that keeps us safe.

Lee Cleveland
Lee Cleveland is the candidate for District Court Judge, Place #5. He was admitted to the Bar in 1985, and has represented clients including Fortune 500 corporations, mid-sized businesses and individuals. He is licensed to practice in both the state and federal courts, including the United States Supreme Court.

Virginia P. Meigs
Virginia P. Meigs, candidate for District Court Judge, Place #7, has been practicing law for the past 20 years. A former nurse, Meigs attended night school at the Birmingham School of Law and went into private practice. She has held numerous leadership and board positions in civic organizations.

Teresa Hester
Teresa Hester is running for District Court Judge, Place # 10. She is a retired educator having taught for 25 years. She now practices law in Hueytown, Alabama. It is her goal and desire to make a difference in the lives of children as they are confronted with adult issues.

Cynthia Vines Butler
Cynthia Vines Butler, candidate for District Court, Place #11, has been practicing law for nearly 15 years. A former Jefferson County Probate Court Judge, she is a graduate of the University of Alabama, and received her J.D. from the Birmingham School of Law.
